Time With God

If you are not sure how to spend time with God then we hope these simple guidelines will be helpful to you.

Firstly it is important that you have become a true Christian and that you know God personally. Please check out our "Know God" page to make sure you are a true Christian.

If possible, it is helpful to start your day with some time alone with God, but if that isn't possible for you then just find the best time when you can be alone, without interruptions.

Start your time with God by praying. Thank God for who He is and for what He has done for you. Ask Him to cleanse you of all known sin and come to Him with a quiet heart. Ask God to speak to you and guide you as you read His Word.

Use a translation of the Bible that you understand, and read your chosen passage from the Bible slowly, making sure you understand what the general meaning is. You don't need to read a long passage, just read as much as you know you will have time to think about properly. Use a dictionary if there are words you don't understand. When you have read the passage once go back through it asking the following questions:

  • What does this passage teach me about God the Father, the Holy Spirit, or the Lord Jesus Christ?
  • What can I learn about each of the people mentioned in the passage?
  • What does the passage teach me about myself?
  • Is there a lesson that I can learn from this passage, or an example that I can follow?
  • Are there any pitfalls mentioned in the passage that I need to avoid?

When you feel you have gained as much from the passage as you can then pray again, thanking God for all that He has shown you.

Continue to pray and bring your petitions for other people to God. Pray for

  • your family members,
  • your pastor and church leadership,
  • missionaries who are serving God overseas
  • your friends - especially for those who don't yet know the Lord as their Saviour. Commit your day to the Lord and ask for His guidance on all that you do. Pray for opportunities to share your faith with others. Praise God again for His wonderful goodness.
